Many of us have our multi-factor authentication (MFA) set up on our mobile phones only. This is an easy way to access all that we need, but what if we lose our phone or get a new one?
The IT Service Desk receives a lot of calls in January every year from people who got a new phone during the break and didn't have a second authentication method set up before switching to their new device.
Why set up a second way to access MFA?
Having a second method of accessing MFA, on a separate device means you won't lose access to your accounts, and it makes setting up your new phone much easier.
In the excitement to use new devices received or purchased during the holidays, not everyone remembers to set up MFA - they arrive back at Oxford unable to access accounts that need authentication.
It's strongly recommended that all staff and students at Oxford set up a second method of authentication on a separate device.

If you've forgotten how to set up your MFA, check the easy-to-follow guidance on the IT Help website.
For help with MFA, ask your local IT support contact in the first instance - they can reset your account if needed.
