Microsoft Stream (Classic) - act now to save your recordings

Microsoft has now moved Stream (Classic) into a ‘view only’ state, meaning that you can no longer upload new content. Until the permanent closure of the service on 15 February 2024, video content remaining in the platform will be available to view, edit, download or delete.

If you have not already done so, it’s time to act so you do not lose access to your content hosted in Stream (Classic).

Seven steps to download and save your content

If you want control over the new location of your Stream (Classic) content, here’s what you can do:

  1. Visit Microsoft Stream (Classic)
  2. Click on 'My Content' in the top navigation
  3. Review your stored video content
  4. Download any videos you want to keep
  5. Re-upload them to another service, or another part of Nexus365 (for example a Team, your OneDrive or a SharePoint site you have access to)
  6. Delete any unwanted content hosted in Stream (Classic)
  7. Ensure that you re-share your videos from their new location.

If you take this approach you will need to re-share permissions for videos manually, but you will also be able to move and keep custom transcriptions and subtitles if you have them.

How we are helping

Another option is to book a migration for your Stream (Classic) content and we will move your content for you. Migrating your content will preserve permissions and vital metadata (creation date, modification date etc.) associated with your files. However, custom transcriptions, channels or custom subtitles will not be preserved - only your video content can be moved

Booking your migration

Just search in the IT Self Service portal for ‘Stream Classic Migration Request Form’, and submit your request. Please read these Stream (Classic) closure frequently asked questions (FAQs) and the terms and conditions before completing your form. If you are the owner of a company-wide channel (viewable across the University) or any content aligned to a Microsoft Team or Microsoft 365 Group, we will be in touch with you to arrange a separate migration.

What will happen when your migration is booked

  • After your request is received, your content will be migrated to your OneDrive for Business, into a folder called ‘Stream Migrated Videos’ - you will be notified when this is complete. Please be patient, we anticipate being very busy.
  • You can then move your content into a location of your choice (Teams, SharePoint etc.) if you wish. Remember that your OneDrive is only active while you are employed by the University, so when you leave and your account is deleted, your OneDrive content will be unavailable. If others need access to your files, it’s best to move them to a shared location.

What happens if I take no action?

When Microsoft closes the service permanently, you will lose control of your Stream (Classic) files and their location. We recommend choosing to move the files yourself (deleting any unwanted material), or booking a migration as soon as possible.
