Data Centre Senior Operator

The Data Centre Senior Operator is responsible for assisting the Data Centre Manager in the day-to-day running of IT Services’ data centres, including deputising for the Manager when necessary. The post holder is also expected to make a contribution, commensurate with skills and experience, to the University's major data centre projects, including the refurbishment of existing facilities and the  running of the University shared datacentre and the external data centre service.

Essential selection criteria

  • Educated to at least A level standard or equivalent together with relevant employment experience
  • Demonstrable experience of contributing to the running of a data centre to support high availability IT systems
  • Knowledge and familiarity with all aspects of desktop publishing and page layout processes, including multi-page and large-format printing
  • Technical competency, including practical understanding of power and cooling management systems; some familiarity with tools for data backup operations, system monitoring; as well as standard office and internet applications
  • Experience of assisting with the assembly and cabling of rack-mounted equipment
  • Ability to contribute to both large- and small-scale projects, including an understanding of basic project management concepts
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to provide user support, participate in formal meetings and liaise with staff at various levels of the organisation
  • Demonstrable experience of writing documentation for different purposes, including user support and internal service management
  • Demonstrable experience of organising a busy and varied workload requiring self-motivation and excellent time management skills

Desirable selection criteria

  • Familiarity with, or a willingness to learn about, good practice in data centre management and energy efficiency (including 'green data centre' concepts)
  • Familiarity with IT service provision within a university environment
  • Understanding of basic disaster recovery processes and business continuity planning within the context of IT services
  • Holder of current valid driving licence
  • The skills and experience to become an effective member of the department as quickly as possible
