Database Administrator

These roles provide support for a range of databases and applications (including Oracle E-Business Suite) and contribute to project-related tasks and implementations, carrying out planned and routine maintenance to applications and database systems according to predefined schedules, and monitoring of system performance. The posts report to Team Leaders of group within Infrastructure Services and work collaboratively with colleagues within the wider support teams including the functional, training, communications and projects teams and with other relevant groups across the collegiate University.

Database Administrator roles at this level can be found in the Unix Platform Team and Microsoft Platform Services.

Essential selection criteria

  • Excellent working knowledge of Oracle Database 12c and 11g Enterprise Edition: this will include knowledge of common procedures such as backup and recovery, cloning and other routine tasks that a DBA would carry out as part of normal database maintenance
  • Good knowledge and experience of using of UNIX, preferably one of AIX, Linux or Solaris
  • Experience of installing, configuring and supporting Oracle Databases and Oracle E-Business Suite within a virtualised as well as physical environment
  • Experience of installing, configuring and supporting Oracle Data Guard, Oracle RMAN and supporting Oracle E-Business Suite in a high availability environment
  • Experience using and implementing industry best practices for supporting Oracle Database and E-Business Suite high availability and disaster recovery solutions
  • Strong performance monitoring, Oracle Database and Oracle E-Business Suite optimisation and tuning skills
  • A good general understanding of TCP/IP networking
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise according to project, business and user requirements
  • Good personal communications skills, including the ability to liaise with users at all levels in the University and the production of accurate written documentation
  • Possess a logical approach to problem solving and the ability to think around issues and look at the wider picture in order to provide solutions
  • An ability to exercise discretion and handle confidential information within the confines of the Data Protection Act 1998
  • A proactive and constructive approach to issue resolution: taking ownership of problems, collaborating with colleagues within the team and liaising with members of other teams (support centre analysts, operations team) to diagnose and resolve issues

Desirable selection criteria

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2014, 2012 and 2008 Enterprise Editions: this will include knowledge of common procedures such as backup and recovery, cloning and other routine tasks that a DBA would carry out as part of normal database maintenance
  • Knowledge and experience of using the Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2 and 2012 operating systems
  • Awareness and experience of installing, configuring and supporting SQL Server within a virtualised as well as physical environment
  • Demonstrable experience of database design, implementation and management, with knowledge of techniques to ensure scalability, resilience and disaster recovery
  • Experience of maintaining IT systems in a service environment
  • The skills and experience to become an effective member of the department as quickly as possible
  • Experience of working within an ITIL framework and ideally have experience of the change, incident and problem management processes
  • Experience of working within a project environment and working to deadlines: ideally you will have a basic understanding of a project methodology
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide the technical lead for small and larger system development projects, having taken responsibility for verifying requirements, producing the technical design, implementation and transition of the system into service
