Deputy Team Lead (Infrastructure Services)

The Deputy Team Lead role combines line management, service management and technical specialism within Infrastructure Services. The post reports to the relevant team leader and is responsible for the management of staff and services agreed with the team leader and head of group. The post holders are expected to take a leading role in the service design, delivery and management of systems providing critical services to the University.

Specific roles at these levels include:

  • Deputy Team Leader, Unix Platform Services
  • Managed Network Services Deputy Team Leader
  • Unix Platform Services Deputy Team Leader
  • Microsoft Platform Services Deputy Team Leader

Actual grade of the role will be determined by the level of responsibility, size of group and other factors.

Essential selection criteria

  • Knowledge, intellectual capacity, reasoning and analytical skills equivalent to those of a graduate
  • Demonstrable experience or potential of providing leadership to highly expert technical teams, including recruitment, staff development and performance management
  •  Familiarity with processes and recommended practice associated with IT service management
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and manage resources within a collaborative team-based environment, both for IT service delivery and service development
  • Knowledge of financial processes, including budget planning, expenditure forecasting and reporting
  • Familiarity with IT systems life cycle management, from design through to implementation and management
  • Ability to develop strategy for IT service operations, with particular emphasis on the infrastructure required to meet service levels, taking account of current and emerging organisational requirements and initiatives as well as emerging developments in related technology
  • Excellent communications skills, including the presentation of complex ideas to a variety of audiences and the production of accurate written documentation
  • Proven ability to develop and enhance expertise in relevant areas of knowledge
  • Demonstrable experience of organising a busy and varied workload requiring self-motivation and excellent time management skills

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience of IT service provision within a university environment
  • Certification in, or demonstrable knowledge of, ITIL or comparable IT service management methodologies
  • Technical expertise and practical knowledge of two or more of: supporting IT infrastructure; systems integration and security; networking or storage; IT operations and development environments; large-scale databases
  • Successful experience of developing business cases for funding
  • Experience of managing or contributing to IT infrastructure upgrade projects
  • Understanding of the challenges of transitioning the outcomes of projects to sustainable services
