Digital Skills Manager

The role of the Digital Skills Manager is to manage the activities of the digital skills teaching team and to deliver teaching on IT-related topics as part of the IT Learning Centre’s learning activities and events. The post holder is expected to be an expert in a particular teaching area, and an enthusiastic communicator of that expertise, able to engage with the many different audiences within the University.

In addition they are expected to fully contribute to committees and other forums in the formulation of IT teaching policies and initiatives at all levels, and to steer the development of digital skills courses and events in directions that provide the most benefit to the University’s IT skills requirements.

Essential selection criteria

  • Graduate or equivalent
  • The ability to lead a small team of teachers / trainers in the delivery of a digital skills programme
  • Experience of project management
  • Ability to liaise with senior members of the University, and with representatives of the IT technical community, and to provide technical leadership in these interactions
  • A proven track record of excellence in IT teaching, training and assessing learner needs in a relevant context
  • An ability to prepare resources appropriate to a range of audiences and media, including documentation for face-to-face and online delivery, written to a high standard
  • Able to teach people who have a wide range of ability and experience, including novice users and highly focused academics
  • Excellent computer literacy skills with demonstrable knowledge and experience in a range of commonly used applications and specialist knowledge of one or more non-Office applications
  • Excellent communication, presentation and written skills which inspire and motivate learners
  • Competence in the use of learning technology tools both in the classroom and online
  • Evidence of being a reflective practitioner who strives for excellent practice
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise a varied workload under pressure in an environment with strict deadlines and to plan and organise concurrent projects
  • An ability to quickly become an effective member of the team and fit in with established working practices
  • Commitment to a service ethos and the ability to ensure that essential services are maintained

Desirable selection criteria

  • A recognised teaching or training qualification (for example, PGCE, TAP)
  • A recognised qualification or certificate of competence in one or more applications (examples are Advanced ECDL, Apple certification, Adobe certification)
  • Experience in the creation of online courses for distance delivery
  • Experience in the creation and use of multimedia resources for use in teaching
  • Experience of a university environment
  • An understanding of accessibility and usability issues
  • Experience of the use of both Windows and Mac OSX
