Head of Group (Infrastructure Services)

The principle function of this role is to provide leadership for a group within Infrastructure Services. The post holder has responsibility for overall planning and management within the group, developing and maintaining the portfolio of services and programme of projects operated by the group.

Roles at this level include:

  • Head of Research Computing and Support Services
  • Head of Platform Services
  • Networks and Telecommunications Group Manager
  • Head of Enterprise Applications Group

Essential selection criteria

  • Degree-level education with substantial relevant work experience
  • Ability to handle and prioritise a complex portfolio in a challenging and fast-moving environment, to show equally high effectiveness in contributing to strategic thinking and in undertaking key operational tasks
  •  Demonstrable experience of leading teams comprised of technical professionals
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other members of the department, senior stakeholders within the University and third party providers
  • Significant experience in delivering IT services gained at senior management level, whether in a commercial, public sector or higher education environment
  • Demonstrable experience of directing one or more business-critical programmes or projects, requiring stakeholder engagement and influence at a senior level
  • Proven ability to think and plan strategically and possess the creativity required to identify, scope and implement IT solutions to support the education and research priorities of the University
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of preparing business cases for funding
  • Strategic knowledge of emerging and best practice methodologies, technologies and standards for the delivery of IT systems to support education and research
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact with staff at all levels of the collegiate University, recognising the demands of an academic environment and the specific challenges that these present
  • Experience of financial management, in particular, budget oversight, contract negotiation, and developing and maintaining supplier relationships
  • Demonstrable experience of organising a busy and varied workload requiring self-motivation and good time management skills

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience of delivering enterprise IT services in one or more areas of: backup and storage, collaborative platforms (groupware), telecommunications and unified communications
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge of a range of platforms and solutions, for example solutions for enterprise backup and storage, unified communications and voice-over-IP, virtualised infrastructure and hybrid clouds and groupware platforms for collaboration
  • Experience in the implementation of costing and pricing models within an IT service environment
  • Familiarity with service management methodologies, such as ITIL, together with programme and project management methodologies, tools and techniques such as PRINCE2 or MSP
