There are many training resources available for IT Support Staff, within the University and beyond. The University ICT Forum (ICTF) and IT Services have brokered special discounts with several companies offering technical training, including system admin and programming.

Training events for IT Support Staff

The ITS3 events calendar includes local and some national events of interest to ITSS, includes ITSS events, Oxford Linux User Group meetings, Oxon BCS, etc. Where available, we have included links to further information, including presentation material.

ITS3 runs induction sessions for all IT Support Staff new in post or wanting a refersher. This is a vital introduction to IT at Oxford and a useful update for all.

The annual ICTF Conference is a full day of talks, workshops, seminars, presentations, exhibitions and food. The website includes copies of most presentations.

ITSS seminars and special events advertised on the itss-announce and itss-discuss mailing lists and on the ITSS events calendar. To join the mailing lists, you must first join the ITSS Register.

Training within the University

IT Services' IT Learning Centre, open to all members of the University, includes instructor-led courses and self-teaching resources.
Oxford has a subscription with a huge wealth of training in all aspects of IT for IT Staff and users alike.
The Oxford Learning Institute provides voluntary courses for university and college staff.
The Department for Continuing Education (ContEd) offers a range of part-time adult learning courses.
The Academic IT Group organises courses, events and workshops.
The Bodleian Libraries offer training in information management to library staff.

National bodies offering training for the HE community

UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association): Communication skills for IT and library staff, courses for advisors, managers, etc.
Janet (UK) provides training on connection to Janet, networks, security, webmaster, etc.

C7 Solutions Culham Science Park Specialise in Microsoft, Oracle, Check Point and Nokia certification.
First Alternative Training centre at Harwell, a short taxi ride from Didcot station. Their Solaris courses are considerably cheaper than those run by Sun and cover as much, if not more, material although they do not lead to certification. Make more than one booking on the same purchase order, for the same person or several, for a 10% discount. 
Global Knowledge Wokingham Courses in Cisco, Microsoft, ITIL, PRINCE2, Java, Python, C, C++, C#, PHP, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server.
HP Education Services London HP-UX, Linux, OpenView, MPE/iX, E-services.
Learning Tree National Some interesting titles like LAN Troubleshooting; no information currently available on quality of teaching.
MindWorks Courses can be arranged in Oxford if there is enough demand. Known particularly for their Novell courses, they do good stuff on Linux and Microsoft too.
Net Connect Bristol Internet security and security products such as Floodgate, Firewall, MAILsweeper, etc
PTR Associates Wokingham, near Reading Offer educational pricing through negotiations with Eduserv. They run MCSE courses.
Q Associates National Delphi, Cobol, data and voice networking, Lotus Notes, Compaq, etc.
SkillSolve Based in West Hagbourne near Didcot. A Microsoft Certified Partner for Learning Solutions They offer Technical IT and Development (.NET) Training courses in Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix, and Macromedia. SkillSolve is also a VUE Testing Centre. For University members they offer a 30% discount off their retail prices.

Well House Consultants Run courses in Melksham, Wiltshire Reviews have been consistently brilliant and Graham, who teaches most if not all the courses, knows his stuff inside-out, back to front and upside down. He has run several courses at IT Services for ITSS. There is no set discount but say you are from Oxford University and that Jane Littlehales sent you. Highly recommended.
