Junior Network Operations Technician

In a busy environment you will be part of a team responsible for the installation, basic configuration, management, support and operation of the University’s networks and some of the services and devices that run on it, including its external links. You will also undertake the wide variety of work that is associated with the various networks. You will be required to work closely with other members of the team and be guided by more senior members of the team.

Essential selection criteria

  • A good standard of education (minimum GCSE or equivalent) with at least one year’s computing experience
  • Reliable, methodical, meticulous, thorough and adaptable
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work with staff at all levels in the University
  • A willingness to work as part of a team, with an approachable and helpful attitude
  • Good at problem resolution; able to work on own initiative, but not afraid to take advice as necessary
  • Able to prioritise multiple, and often conflicting, demands
  • Good general IT skills

Desirable selection criteria

  • Attained or working towards CompTIA Network+ or equivalent qualifications
  • A knowledge of basic TCP/IP, data networking and concepts, the hardware involved in the movement of data between computers (such as routers, switches), Local (LAN), Metropolitan (MAN) and Wide (WAN) Area Network technologies and network protocols
  • Knowledge of HP Comware and Cisco networking equipment
  • Working knowledge of transmission media such as optical fibre, wireless and wired standards, for example Cat5e, Cat6, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac
  • Practical experience with fibre and copper network diagnostic equipment
  • Experience with working with enterprise wireless systems such as AeroHive, Cisco PRIME, Ruckus
  • Experience with working in highly complex communication rooms and data centres
  • Experience of VoIP systems
  • System administration skills
